What Are Moles and How Do I Get Rid of Moles?

Have you notices a series of 3-5″, rounded ridges across the surface of your lawn that are followed by little volcanoes of soil? It looks like your lawn has a mole around! I know what you are thinking: “what are moles and how do I get rid of moles?” These small mammals can cause a lot of damage in a short amount of time because their tunneling ruins any plants and roots in their path. You need to get rid of moles in your lawn before they do extensive damage, here’s what you need to know about moles.

What Is a Mole?

Moles are small mammals that dig tunnels and live underground. They have round bodies, tiny ears and eyes, reduced hind limbs but short and powerful forelimbs with large paws adapted for digging.

What Is a Mole’s Diet?

A mole’s diet consists of small insects, including grubs and worms. Because of their diet, moles will dig underground and create tunnels to find food.

How Do I Know If I Have Moles?

The most obvious sign that you have moles if your lawn has mounds of dirt that are round, symmetrical, and cone-like, resembling almost like volcanoes. A mole mound can be more than a foot in diameter. Just because moles eat insects does not mean they do not cause damage to your plants. The tunnels they dig can cause problems to your plants and grass roots and can destroy your lawn.

How Do I Prevent Moles?

To help prevent mole infestations, make your yard as mole-unfriendly as possible. Use products season long that controls worms, grub, and other insects in your lawn to limit food supply.

How Tee Time Lawn Care Can Help

A mole can be a tricky critter to evict because it lives underground. We advise against using repellants and fumigants, especially if you have pets or children that may get exposed.

At Tee Time, we use a 2-Step Mole Control Program to eliminate moles from your lawn. Moles like to eat grubs and worms so we would eliminate their food source by applying an insecticide. Our technicians will bait the tunnels with a product that mimics their food source. This bait will eliminate the moles in the lawn. Our second treatment will follow exactly how the first treatment runs.

Luckily, you’ll probably never notice more than one mole at a time tearing up your yard, but that doesn’t make them any less of a nuisance. Identifying a mole infestation early can save your lawn from more damage.
